SHADOW LAB / EXHIBIT 04 / NANOCORE

The invoice trail.

An inbox. An ordinary-looking document. A chain of decisions.
Follow two historical campaign patterns and see where a defender can interrupt them.

WHAT IS SOURCE / WHAT IS SIMULATION

Two cases. Distinct evidence.

Proofpoint documented invoice lures using an archive or hosted download. Talos documented a separate Fajan spreadsheet route, including a NanoCore variant. These are separate case replays, not one combined historical incident.

The invoice preview is a static illustration, not a PDF exploit. Names, hosts, records, controls, and the interactive controller are fictional. Each original source figure is labeled in the gallery.

NanoCore

CISA included NanoCore in its advisory on prominent malware strains observed in 2021. An old name does not establish that a threat has disappeared.

Learning lens: track behavior and evidence rather than assuming age means irrelevance.
